Proposed redevelopment of the Strand Street Quarry, Cape Town

The Appeal of the Environmental Authorisation for this application was decided by the Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning on 14 October 2025. The Minister dismissed the appeal and confirmed the decision of the competent authority.

The City of Cape Town proposes to implement a redevelopment vision for the Stand Street Quarry site, a historic quarry and National Heritage Site located on a portion of the remainder of Erf 367, erf 617, and a portion of unregistered State Land in Cape Town. The City of Cape Town proposes to redevelop the site into a multi-use facility focused on sports, economic, tourism, and heritage uses. A conceptual site development plan was prepared for the site in 2023, through a consultative and iterative process involving community stakeholders and technical inputs. It includes the following land uses:

• Sports facilities
• Economic and tourism facilities
• Utilities and safety interventions
• Public realm upgrades and improved pedestrian infrastructure
• Vehicle Parking
• Supporting and utilities infrastructure
• Geotechnical interventions
