Proposed rehabilitation of watercourses on Farm 15/37 and Farm Re/37, Grootplaat

The Grootplaat rehabilitation project is focused on the watercourses on Farm 15/37 and the remainder RE/37 near Aurora within the Bergrivier Municipality, Western Cape. The property extends across approximately 2 146 ha and is situated within the upper catchment of the Kuilders River system. The site is a high plateau historically used for agriculture, with a valley-bottom watercourse and various associated habitats. The property has been subject to historical agricultural activities, hydrological modification and associated infrastructure development. Over time, these activities, together with the proliferation of invasive alien plant vegetation, altered hydrological processes, drainage modifications, channelisation, erosion and sedimentation, have resulted in prolonged degradation or watercourses and their associated freshwater ecosystems, which reduced the hydrological connectivity, ecological functioning of theses aquatic system.

PROJECT PROPOSAL

The applicant proposes the rehabilitation of degraded wetlands, watercourses, in-channel dams and former agricultural lands on the Grootplaat site through targeted rehabilitation interventions that improve hydrological functioning, biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

The rehabilitation programme aims to

  • Improve wetland hydrology;
  • Reverse the impacts of historical agricultural activities;
  • Control alien invasive vegetation;
  • Restore and increase indigenous biodiversity;
  • Stabilise erosion-prone areas; and
  • Improve the long-term resilience of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems across the property.
